Being of dubious mind, I decided to get out the trusty Guinness Book
of Hit Singles after people expressed surprise at Madness being Number Two
behind Bad Manners in 1980, and other esteemed bands like The Jam not being
in the Top Ten at all. The criteria for the programme were twofold: Top 40
hits and weeks in the chart. Well, the findings are indeed true. Bad Manners
attained 2 more weeks in the charts. The case for The Jam is rather harder
to fathom. They did indeed release 8 singles in that year, but only 4 were
Top 40, and 6 were re-entries from 77-79.
For the record:
Kelly Marie - (2 hits, 1 n1, 23 weeks)
David Bowie - (3, 1 n1, 23)
Sheena Easton - (3, 33)
Liquid Gold - (3, 30)
Dexy's Midnight Runners - (3, 1 n1, 29)
Blondie - (3, 3 n1, 30)
Police - (4, 1 n1, 26)
The Specials - (4, 1 n1, 29)
Madness - (4, 43)
Bad Manners - (4, 44)
The Jam kicked in with (3, 21), including one re-entry.
So, now we know. Pretty much like all of them in there :o)
Stay Mad 8-)

Mountain Boy Reporting In ,
Check out Suggs on page 5 of this weeks Radio Times.
Who gave him that shirt ? Was it one of Vince's old ones left
over from the Ian Dury Tribute / Auction Day ?
Yes , Madness were robbed at being only number 2.
But what about The Jam ??????????????????????
No less than 8 chart singles including two New Entry at No. 1.
Not even in the top 10 acts ? Kiss my arse ! BBC cock up again !
