If you went by the rules that C4 seemed to use for their Top Ten, then Adam
and the Ants had 52 weeks of chart success in 1980, which would have placed
them at No. 2 instead of Madness!
In reality, their singles actually spent 22 weeks on the chart in 1980. They
had three singles on the chart coming into 1981. Dog Eat Dog spent a further
4 weeks, Antmusic 14 weeks and Young Parisians 12 meaning 30 of those weeks
were in 1981. Adam and the Ants actually went on to spend 91 weeks on the
chart that year.
As for ABBA, my second favourite band!, two number 1s, yes, but only 17
weeks chart life.
Let's face it, C4 could have done a much better job with their calculations.
Even Cliff Richard chalked up 27 chart weeks in 1980, which should have
edged out Kelly Marie, but that would have stopped them dragging her out of
some dusty attic and giving her another 15 (or should I say 5) minutes of
fame. Perhaps Sir Cliff didn't fancy saying a few words for a C4
documentary!
We all know that Madness were the most successful band of the Eighties, and
they're still up to the job now. There are still very few artists who have
managed to chalk up top ten hits in three different decades, maybe even four
if new material emerges. Staircase won't do it.
And I'd bet my pension on that.
Goodnight.
Andrew.
