Tears of a clown was originally done by Smokey Robinson with the aid of his Miracles. Don't know exactly when..I think it was 1973. I know from VH1's extensive video antiquities that they all had matching flares and mad afros. Both versions are excellent, but The Beat's 1979/80 version always makes me and my little sister bop about like lunatics. It was on the top 100 number one singles on Saturday and we impressed our friends by singing along, as none of them had ever heard the song before..good lord, where have they been? Youth of today etc... Mind you, I am 23 & my lil' sis is 21... Another thing, will Madness feature on the new BBC2 series "I love 1980's"? It kicks off on Saturday with 1980 (good place to start) and I really don't think they could get through the entire decade without a mention..I know they were featured in "I love 1979" but I missed that one!!!!!
