No 81: Madness, House of Fun
Always regarded by the more pompus indie rock fan as your
little brother's sort of band, Madness nonetheless evolved
from their ska beginnings into a nifty Britpop band of
cartoon inventiveness whom only the utterly churlish could
fail to be charmed by.
  No more so than on "House of Fun", oddly the magnificient
seven's only Number One single.  All gawk and squiggles,
and originally entitled "Chemist's Facade", it's about the
excruciating embarrassment faced by a youngster trying to
buy his first pack of johnnies.
  "House of Fun" is an Only Fools and Horses style scenario
which strikes into a deeper truth: the trauma that comes
with the liberty of adulthood. "Welcome to the lion's
den..."
