And so to the Top 40, and we start with a new entry.
40 (33) {5} <0> Take It Or Leave It [DNC] [DNC]
The Business made it's first entry to our chart at No. 72, and the version
with added vocals makes it to our Top 40. Written by Mike and Lee, and as
Mike wrote The Business, I assume Lee wrote the lyrics. TIOLI appeared on
Absolutely and gave it's name to the film Madness made about their early
days.
39 (33) {6} <0> Shadow Of Fear [66=] [DNC]
A very respectable climb of 27 places for this track ,also from Absolutely
(in fact it follows TIOLI on the album). Written by Mike and Suggs, it would
be unfair to let this song go by without a special mention for our very own
Jenny Payne. For those that don't know, about a year and a half ago on a
Monday night chat, our Jen posed the question 'What was the name of the
monster in Shadow of Fear?' She thought it was something like Mosfandalegs,
and so a nickname was born. For the record, the line is 'Mind's gone now
legs it's up to you', which Jen thought was 'Mosfandalegs is after you'!!!!
(Sorry Jen, love ya really ;-) )
38 (33) {5} <1> Land Of Hope And Glory [55=] [39=]
This is Lee's song really. In fact this song is Lee. Written and performed
by Kix, this is always a popular live track. Taken from One Step Beyond,
this was the first time Madness' third singer took lead vocals.
37 (34) {4} <1> March Of The Gherkins [32] [39=]
A third appearance in the Top 40 for this popular track from Keep Moving.
The credits on my CD copy of the album have Barson/Thompson/Barson as the
writers. If anyone knows why Barson gets two mentions, let us all know.
Could it be that Mike's brother had something to do with it?
36 (37) {6} <0> E.R.N.I.E [39] [DNC]
A climb of 3 for this excellent song from Absolutely written Suggs and
Chris. For those outside the UK who don't know, long before we had a
National Lottery in the UK, the only way to win any decent money was with
premium bonds. You pay your money, and you get a number. That number is
entered into the draw - for life as well, so you don't have to pay every
week!! Anyway, the machine which chooses the winning numbers is called
Ernie, which is an acronym for Electronic Random Number Indicating
Equipment. So there you have it!
35 (37) {7} <1> Coldest Day [30] [26=]
A slight fall for this track from Mad Not Mad. Suggs and Chris helped write
this song, which also includes a rare writing credit for Clive Langer. This
is the highest placed non-single track from Mad Not Mad.
34 (41) {9} <0> Madness [17] [13]
So where exactly did Madness get their name from? I think it might have been
this song written by the mighty Prince Buster. Madness first appeared as the
b-side of The Prince, but also appeared on the album One Step Beyond.
Strangely it was never mentioned in the track listing for OSB, not even on
the recent reissue as part of The Lot.
32= (43) {9} <0> Not Home Today [DNC] [26=]
A return to our chart for the fourth track from Absolutely to appear in
tonight's segment. This track was written by Suggs and Mark.
32= (43) {9} <0> On The Beat Pete [74=] [18]
Sharing a chart position with Not Home Today is the track which follows it
on Absolutely. Written by Lee and Madness (I guess they all had some input),
this made our top 20 first time out but dropped to 74 last time.
31 (44) {9} <0> Drip Fed Fred [NEW] [-]
Rounding off tonight's chart placings comes another new entry to the chart,
and another new song. This track had No. 1 written all over it, but it
suffered from a lack of promotion by Virgin and only managed to reach No.55
in the UK charts. Vocals are taken on this one by the Late Great Ian Dury
who also appeared in the video along with several TMML members. This was to
be Ian's last appearance in the UK charts, just three weeks before his
untimely death. It was written by Lee and Mike. Legend has it that when Ian
was asked to sing DFF, he said 'are you taking the piss?'. Gone, but not
forgotten, god bless you Ian.
So, next time we'll be into the top 30. There are still plenty of surprises
to come. I hope you're enjoying reading these as much as I'm enjoying
writing them!
Goodnight.
Andrew.
