We continue the chart run down with this foray into the Top 30!!!
30 (45) {8} <1> Prospects [18] [21]
There was a top 20 placing for this song last time out, but a drop of 12
places sees Prospects fall to No. 30. Taken from Keep Moving and written by
Suggs and Chris, this is considered in some areas as one of Madness'
strongest album tracks. A slow, reggae beat, this really is Madness at their
deepest and darkest!
29 (50) {8} <1> In The City [14] [16]
A drop if 15 places for this b-side of Cardiac Arrest. Written by most of
the band (Suggs, Cathal, Mike and Chris) along with two people I'm not
familiar with - Crutchfield and Inoue? Perhaps they had something to with it
use as a backing track for some Japanese TV Commercials. Anyone with the
video of Complete Madness will have seen the wacky Honda City ads!
28 (52) {9} <1> Don't Quote Me On That [20] [17]
Another track dropping from the Top 20 is this track from the Work, Rest and
Play EP. No specific writing credits for the song, just Madness, so I guess
all the guys had some input. As an EP track, it warrants a mention in the
Guinness Book of Hit Singles and a UK chart placing of No. 6 in 1980.
27 (53) {10} <2> You're Wonderful [NEW] [-]
The first new entry to the Top 30 failed to make it onto the album to which
it gave it name (well, most of it.) Written by Chas, he recently shared some
very personal thoughts with the list about this song, and the sad passing of
his father. A popular live track for a few years now, a remixed version of
it made it onto the CD single of Johnny The Horse.
26 (56) {12} <0> Yesterday's Men [48=] [32=]
Climbing back up the charts is Madness' 20th single, which made history for
the band by becoming their 20th consecutive Top 20 hit. Not even The
Beatles, Elvis or Sir Cliff Richard achieved the distinction of their first
20 hits reaching the top 20! This song was written by Suggs and was the
first single to be released on the band's own Zarjazz label. It reached No.
18 in September 1985.
25 (59) {14} <1> In The Middle Of The Night [46] [38]
Another climbing back up the charts is another favourite of mine. Written by
Chris and Suggs, this song appeared on the One Step Beyond album. The jolly
tale of George the Newsagent who spends his evenings nicking underwear off
of washing lines!! Get your knickers down......
24 (59) {11} <2> Shut Up [11] [10]
Top Ten first time, No. 11 last but only No. 24 this time around for Shut
Up. Originally featured on the album Seven, this was written by Suggs and
Chris. It was the second single release from that album, and reached No. 7
in the charts in the Autumn of 1981. The words 'Shut Up' do not appear in
the lyrics of the song, but apparently did originally. I've never heard the
original though, and I wouldn't betting there's only one member on this list
who has ;-).
23 (64) {14} <0> Saturday Night, Sunday Morning [68=] [DNC]
This song should by rights be a new entry on our chart, but it scraped in
last time thanks to a vote from David Scocca! Written by Suggs, it appears
on Wonderful, but was around at live shows for a long time before then!
22 (66) {10} <2> Wings Of A Dove [15] [9]
Madness' second highest chart placing was No. 2, achieved by this song in
1983. Written by Suggs and Chas, who took the roles of pilots in the video.
'I think it's time, Captain Carl...' The London Community Gospel Choir
provided backing vocals for Madness' first venture into gospel music. It was
denied top spot by UB40's Red Red Wine, so no real shame there then.
21 (67) {14} <0> Grey Day [13] [15]
Rounding off tonight's segment is this single written by Mike Barson. Taken
from the album Seven, it was Madness' eighth single release and reached No.
4 in the charts back in 1981.
That's it for now. Next time we enter the Top 20, where we will start with a
couple of new entries!!
Goodnight.
Andrew.
