I don't know about Samantha... maybe someone else does?
But Jennie comes from the 1940 book "A Portrait of Jennie" by Robert
Nathan. I happened to pick it up at my library's used book sale... a
beautiful old copy with a 40s painting of "Jennie" on the cover. Newer
versions are not as lovely....
The story:
"The supernatural love story of a depression era
artist and a young girl slipping through time, this
spellbinding classic from 1940 is a masterpiece of
modern fantasy."
Robert Nathan writes:
"I have tried-as far as I could-to be a comforter in the
world . . . not through what I know, but what I
don't-and cannot-know. I have tried to suggest the
mystery and the magic."
It was also made into a film in '48 which I have yet to see.
The song fits the story well... especially the echoes on "find her..."
Read the book and then have another listen. ;)
