Hi there, MADmoiselles and gentleMADs !

Some time ago I purchased a book called
"Hit Records Britsh Chart Singles 1970-1990"
which lists every British singles top ten
from 1.1.1970 to 31.12.1990 according to
the "New Musical Express"- and "Music Week"-
charts.

With this material I've put together a "Madness-
Single-Chart".
I gave points for every week a Madness single
stayed in the top ten. (10 points for No.1,
9 points for No.2,...)
For example:
"Michael Caine" entered the charts at No. 8 on
25.2.84 and left the charts two weeks later at No.9.
This gives "Michael Caine" 3 points for the first
week and 2 points for the second (and last) week,
which makes a total of 5 points.
I gave zero points for chart-weeks outside the top ten.
... and as I have only the charts till 1990 perhaps
some weeks miss (for example Lovestruck).

So and there it is:

--- THE MADNESS SINGLE CHART FROM 1979 to 1990 ---
( ACCORDING TO "NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS" )

17. Cardiac Arrest 1 point
Entered the charts at No. 10 in 1982,
    stayed for only one week

15. One Step Beyond... 5 points
    A true Madness-classic, their
second single and first to hit
the Top Ten. Stayed two weeks

15. Michael Caine 5 points
Another legendary track and one of
    my personal favorites. Unfortunately
their last Top Ten-Entry in the 1980's.
    We'll get ya ya ya!

14. T.R.o.t.Los Palmas 7 8 points
The only instrumental ( I think ) ever
released as a single. Highest spot: No.8

13. The Work, Rest & Play 9 points
    Not really a single but a 4 track-Ep.

12. The Sun & The Rain 12 points
Another song that always does quite well
    on the great Annual Madchart.

11. Tomorrow's.../Madness 15 points
A double A-side with only one video
    released.

10. Shut Up 16 points
Stayed only 3 weeks in the Top Ten,
    but reached No.3
    Watch out for flying pianos...

 9. Grey Day 23 points
A great song with a great video,
stayed 4 weeks in the Top Ten

 8. Our House 24 points
    Perhaps Madness' most popular song
outside the UK, but didn't do that
    well in the UK-Charts
    "That's a hit song!"

 7. Driving In My Car 28 points
Follow-up to "House Of Fun" reaching No.2,
beaten only by Irene Cara's 'Fame'

 5. Wings Of A Dove 30 points
    Another No.2 song, this time
UB 40's 'Red Red Wine' occupied
    the No.1 spot.

 5. Embarrassment 30 points
6 weeks in the Top Ten

 4. It Must Be Love 31 points
No.2 on the Annual Madchart, here at
    No.4...

 3. My Girl 35 points
    According to New Musical Express
'My Girl' is Madness' first number
one hit, reaching No.1 in January 1980.

 2. Baggy Trousers 37 points
No No.1 but one of Madness most classic
songs, staying 6 weeks in the Top Ten,
    reaching No.2 ( No.1: The Police-Don't
    Stand So Close To Me)

And the Golden Nutty Boy goes to...
 1. House Of Fun 38 points
Entered the Top Ten in May 1982 at
No. 5 and stayed the next 2 weeks
    at No.1 !!!

Greetings,
Lars
