Hey Now!
The brain has defrostedtime to speak once again.
Ian Dury was the dogs bollocks and New Boots and
Panties was the cats pyjamas so said BP Fallon on
the inlay of the new release Brand New Boots and
Panties.
Just got a copy Friday afternoon at Virgin and lo and
behold the Maddies have indeed made their mark; My
Old Man, track 4 on the ten piece running order.
My Old Man gets straight down to business with Suggs
on the mic after an immediate drum roll by Woodgate.
This is a great track in the first place but Madness
version brings even more life. Already some may have
the version performed by Madness at Sheffield in
October 1999, but this version draws more allegiance
to the one Suggs did with Jools Holland a while back
on Radio 2.
A lot stands out on this version, particularly the
brass section that springs into form verse four. Its
crisp and clear and if listening carefully one can
hear the deep and dulcet tone of Mr Cathal Smyth
underlining the sharp Mc Pherson vocals.
Following this is the instrumental section where the
recognisable Barson ivories are tickled once again. In
classic Barson mode, the plinkity-plonk sound is alive
and well. If ever the keyboard could speak in cockney
voice, I think he could be the man to do it.
I must admit, after Wonderful, I felt it would be
better if the Maddies (dare I say it) dropped Langer
and Winstanley for a future outing (however unlikely
that prospect may look these days), yet here the
Production duo are on top form. Its just very clear,
crisp and clean. However my biggest gripe, and with
all Madness songs is the time; at just 3.13 secs, one
cant help yearning for more.
The track finishes to fade wit the sound of Daddy
daddy.. and then Smyth quietly whispers, All the
best then. Although a line from the actual song, I
think it talks on a certain poignancy in a final
farewell to Durex from all the Madness nephews.
Couple that with nine other tracks of a Beatle, Bragg
and Blockhead (and much much more), Brand new Boots
and Panties is well worth and listen, I did and now
Im doing very well.
All the best
VincE!
P.S. Please lets start and save this list from the
off-topic shite of late. Come on folks, this is a
Madness Mailing list; leave the bags of shite outside
the building before you enter please!
