The version Madness played was based on 54-46 WAS my number,
identified by the stop-start intro ("stick it up mister..."). The
earlier cut didn't features this part. Check the album In The Dark for
the latter cut, and the Reggae Greats comp for the original. The were
a couple of more obscure recordings, but these are the two best known
ones.
Of course the Maytals now refers to Toots backing band, as Raleigh and
Jerry are no longer around (one deceased, one retired).
