Dear Jools,

I have recently purchased your new album "Small World Big Band". I am very
pleased with it and am interested to know about the song "Oranges and
Lemons" written about Mr Ian Dury. I am sorry if this may sound rather
foolish but I dont understand the use of the phrase oranges and lemons. I
thought it may be a reference to one arm bandit machines. Especially with
the next line " 3 bells in a row" .. is this referring to Ian as a one arm
bandit? :).. or is it meant as a metaphor of life and luck .. ie you win
some/ you lose some? I know the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons" has
reference to the Bells of St.Clements ..but there are 10 bells at that
Church apparently ...not 3 in a line. ;)

I would be very grateful and interested in your thoughts on this subject.

Love Mad_lizzie :)

x
