Ive recently been in contact with Haringey Council,
with regard to the licence applications they have
received for the use of Finsbury Park this summer.
Sadly the list of events so far applied for does not
include a Madstock and they are not anticipating any
further applications at this stage.

It seems that Mean Fiddler who have been responsible
for the Madstock festivals in the past, have opted
instead for an 80s/pop day, just as they did in 2000.
A real shame and I trust that Madness as per 2000 will
be taking the commendable position of
non-participation.

So, regarding a suggestion that has been rumoured
around in the past, do Madness carry on regardless and
organise it themselves? Well, technically it probably
could be achieved although it would require a huge
amount of administration and would require direct
guidance from people who have had an active
involvement in organising such events in the past.

Having said this, in granting licences local
authorities increasingly prefer to see renowned
corporations playing a key role in the organisation.
This was particularly evident in the granting of the
licence for this year's Glastonbury Festival being
dependent on Mean Fiddler's involvement. The Festival
had previously managed to retain its independence for
31 years. So it does seem that any chances of a future
Madstock may be totally dependent on whether Mean
Fiddler or a similar organisation get behind it.

But all is not completely losta Madness weekend may
still be on the cards for sometime this summer (any
news of provisional dates ????) and Madness themselves
will inevitably do another round of indoor arena gigs
before too long.

Chris
