As helpfully reminded by a couple of others during the last week or so, I got up early this Sunday morning to listen to and record Desert Island Discs. A very good interview by Sue Lawley, probing answers to questions we all more or less knew the answers to, but the casual litener would still find interesting. Suggs only mentioned the Caledonian Road about a dozen times, and didn't mention the usual anecdote about thieving Lee's coppers.
For those not having a clue what the programme involves, the guest is interviewed and asked what eight records they would want with them if they were stranded on a desert island. They are also asked to nominate a book and a luxury item.
Anyway, his choices for the Desert Island were:

Record 1 - The Kinks, Village Green Preservation Society (no explanation needed)
Record 2 - Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Sex & Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll (no explanation needed)
Record 3 - The Clash, London's Burning (no explanation needed)
Record 4 - Prince Buster, Al Capone (no explanation needed)
Record 5 - John Betjeman, On The Portrait Of A Deaf Man (a morbid poem read to a piano accompaniment by the celebrated poet, from an album played to him by Anne)
Record 6 - Peggy Lee, Is That All There Is? (the only record on the famous juke-box in Suggs's first home)
Record 7 - Van Morrison, Cleaning Windows (wtf?)
Record 8 - Julia London, Cry Me A River (hmm...)

When pushed, the sole record he would take would be the Peggy Lee one.

His castaway book would be a book of Italian verbs. Apparently, he recently did a month's intensive Italian after buying a home in Italy, and went slowly backwards.

His one luxury item would be a nucleus of bees. The Royal jelly he reckoned would keep his skin smooth until he was rescued. Not too mention the honey, bee's wax and cough and cold remedies.

And that was it. 45 very enjoyable minutes, recorded for posterity on tape.
