Jenny and every other concerned list member,

This is a legitimate discussion concerning the future and of this list, as
well as the management of it. This e-mail is also a continuation of a
previous one.

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the use of the word "fanny" in
yesterdays e-mail. Working as I do in the high-pressure world of the meedja
(sic), I was caught at a bad moment and it seemed like an appropriate word
to use at the time. While I have never met Wosssa, I have to admit that I
cannot categorically say for certain if he is in actual fact a "fanny".
Time will maybe tell, or indeed the benefit of my doubt. In the meantime, I
apologise as it was most out of character for me. For our mad-cousins in
the States, the word "fanny" will obviously not be as an offensive
statement to them as it may have been to anyone living here in the UK.
Please consult your nearest Limey-Yank Dictionary for a fuller explanation.

Secondly, I would like to propose a vote.

Motion: That this list remains about Madness the band, the Madness fans,
the music, this video's in fact everything and anything else to do with
Madness. Anyone wanting to lurk in the far corners then offer one-liners or
completely irrelevant mailings should really go and join another more
appropriate list. In other words, we continue to abide by what is in the
List Charter! The issue of submitting trash is mentioned specifically, so
if we choose to ignore it and allow spurious e-mails of no relevance at
all, then what's the point in having this forum? It will quickly become an
"inbox hazard" and people will start un-subscribing.

Allow me to digress on the issue off "off-topic/off-list". For the
un-enlightened among us, "off-topic" in our context usually means not
directly related to Madness or pertaining to the particular thread of
discussion that is being discussed as highlighted in the 'subject' field in
any given e-mail. For example:

a) A popular ska band may be playing some dates in the UK and someone
wishes to inform the rest of, what are MOSTLY like-minded individuals,
about it.

b) A thread entitled "Facts about Madness" for example, may divert suddenly
to something totally different like "Suggs just spotted in Camden Town!"
Both are entirely related to Madness. Both are different. Yet both have the
same subject line, thereby we now have the definitive version of off-topic.
(In our context).

"Off-list" is defined as contact between two or more parties, outside the
forum in question. This could be via any digital, electronic, or just about
any other possible means of communication so long as it is not in the
public domain of the said forum. In the example of what was said yesterday
by Wosssa, an e-mail intended for the entire population of the TMML would
not have been received by anyone had it been sent "off-list" to one party.
That is because, as I have said before, this issue of pollution in our list
concerns us all. Similarly, I don't believe "off-topic" can be applied when
a discussion about Madness goes on to talk about Rugby. This could be more
accurately described as "off-list" or probably even better,
"off-on-a-totally-unrelated-uninteresting-unsubscribed-subject".

Anyone who wishes to discuss this further may do so through the TMML if you
believe it affects us all. I can also be contacted at the usual address.
More information can also be found at www.madness7.com and then clicking on
the CHARTER button. This, I believe, supports me fully.

Regards,

Mr.G
