Startling Statistic & an Appeal from ACORN

Fifteen percent of all houses and apartments in the United States stood
empty at the end of 2008 - a record 19 million homes - according to data
released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau. Vacant housing units in the
fourth quarter increased nearly 7 percent compared with the same period in
2007, largely because of bank foreclosures and owners who abandoned their
properties.' - San Francisco Chronicle, February 5, 2009

One of the hardest things to deal with in the current economic depression is
the disgusting hypocrisy of the U.S. congress, the new president, and the
members of the Federal Reserve System. It is one thing to be told, as we all
are, that we must hand over fat wads of our hard-earned money to these
warmongering and thieving snakes or face jail terms, but one feels a whole
new level of revulsion when these people make statements to the effect that
they, and they alone, are in a position to "save the economy" by "creating
jobs." These statements are made by people who have done virtually
everything in their power to destroy the American economy over the last few
decades, but who have now proclaimed themselves to be our saviors. Only the
most naïve and unlearned among us could possibly be falling for the idea
that a bunch of self-serving politicians, bureaucrats and bankers are going
to "save" us from problems they have caused.

On its face, the idea that politicians, bureaucrats, and bankers could
"save" the economy is laughable... [Article continues.]

Financial

Coup d'Etat

The response from the pension fund investors to this analysis was quite
positive until the President of the CalPERS pension fund -- the largest in
the country -- said, "You don't understand. It's too late. They have given
up on the country. They are moving all the money out in the fall [of 1997].
They are moving it to Asia." Sure enough, that fall, significant amounts of
moneys started leaving the US, including illegally. Over $4 trillion went
missing from the US government. No one seemed to notice. Misled into
thinking we were in a boom economy by a fraudulent debt bubble engineered
with force and intention from the highest levels of the financial system,
Americans were engaging in an orgy of consumption that was liquidating the
real financial equity we needed urgently to reposition ourselves for the
times ahead. The mood that afternoon in London was quite sober. The question
hung in the air, unspoken: once the bubble was over, was the time coming
when we, too, would be "de-modernized?" - Catherine Austin-Fitts

Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism

Wolin portrays a country where citizens are politically uninterested and
submissive--and where elites are eager to keep them that way. At best the
nation has become a "managed democracy" where the public is shepherded, not
sovereign. At worst it is a place where corporate power no longer answers to
state controls. Wolin makes clear that today's America is in no way morally
or politically comparable to totalitarian states like Nazi Germany, yet he
warns that unchecked economic power risks verging on total power and has its
own unnerving pathologies. Wolin examines the myths and mythmaking that
justify today's politics, the quest for an ever-expanding economy, and the
perverse attractions of an endless war on terror. He argues passionately
that democracy's best hope lies in citizens themselves learning anew to
exercise power at the local level.

Not Going to Be OK

The American left, he said, has crumbled. It sold out to a bankrupt
Democratic Party, abandoned the working class and has no ability to
organize. Unions are a spent force. The universities are mills for corporate
employees. The press churns out info-entertainment or fatuous pundits. The
left, he said, no longer has the capacity to be a counterweight to the
corporate state. He said that if an extreme right gains momentum there will
probably be very little organized resistance. "The left is amorphous," he
said. "I despair over the left. Left parties may be small in number in
Europe but they are a coherent organization that keeps going. Here, except
for Nader's efforts, we don't have that. We have a few voices here, a
magazine there, and that's about it. It goes nowhere." - Chris Hedges

Surge as Financial Crisis Worsens

...in western culture we worship those who have money. They are paraded in
front of us daily as an example of the 'winners' in our society. HOW they
made their money is irrelevant. Sweat shops, prison labor, snake oil, we
don't care how the money was made. The fact that they made money at all
makes them a 'winner'! THAT'S why we will never go after these bass turds or
stop the next wave of people just like them. - Cybershaman

BASES,
<http://www.worldproutassembly.org/archives/2009/02/bases_empire_an.html>
EMPIRE, AND GLOBAL RESPONSE

States that invest their people's wealth in overseas bases have paid direct
as well as opportunity costs, the consequences of which in the long run have
usually been collapse of the empire. In The Rise and Fall of Great Powers,
Kennedy notes that previous empires which established and tenaciously held
onto overseas bases inevitably saw their wealth and power decay and that
history demonstrates that military "security" alone is never enough. It may,
over the shorter term, deter or defeat rival states ... [b]ut if, by such
victories, the nation over-extends itself geographically and strategically;
if, even at a less imperial level, it chooses to devote a large proportion
of its total income to "protection," leaving less for "productive
investment," it is likely to find its economic output slowing down, with
dire implications for its long-term capacity to maintain both its citizens'
consumption demands and its international position - Catherine Lutz

(in Rhetoric) We Can Believe In? Obama and the Empire

Mr. President, there's a lot more to be undone in our foreign policy if you
wish to be taken seriously as a moral leader like Martin Luther King, Jr.:
banning the use of depleted uranium, cluster bombs, and other dreadful
weapons; joining the International Criminal Court instead of trying to
sabotage it; making a number of other long-overdue apologies in addition to
the one mentioned re Vietnam; and much more. You've got your work cut out
for you if you really want to bring some happiness to this sad old world,
make America credible and beloved again, stop creating armies of
anti-American terrorists, and win over people like me. And do you realize
that you can eliminate all state and federal budget deficits in the United
States, provide free health care and free university education to every
American, pay for an unending array of worthwhile social and cultural
programs, all just by ending our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not starting
any new ones, and closing down the Pentagon's 700+ military bases? Think of
it as the peace dividend Americans were promised when the Cold War would end
some day, but never received. How about you delivering it, Mr. President?
It's not too late. But you are committed to the empire; and the empire is
committed to war. Too bad. - William Blum

century land grab - rich countries snap up land in Africa and elsewhere

History may be repeating itself. Until the mid-20th century, many European
countries grew rich on the resources of their colonies. Now, countries
including China, Kuwait and Sweden are snapping up vast tracts of
agricultural land in poorer nations, especially in Africa, to grow biofuels
and food for themselves. The land grabs have sparked accusations of
neocolonialism and fears that the practice could worsen poverty. Yet some
organisations think this could be a chance for poor countries to trade land
and labour for the technology and investment vital for developing their own
food and energy production. The rush for land was triggered by this year's
food crisis and the European push for biofuels. The South Korean firm Daewoo
made headlines last week when it sought a 99-year lease on 1.3 million
hectares of Madagascar to grow maize and oil palm. The deal is far from
unusual.

Task to Make Democracy Matter: Educating Obama

Building a more just, ecologically sustainable, and democratic future, or as
Jacques Derrida puts it, the promise of "a democracy to come,"11 demands a
politics in which the new technologies are important but only insofar as
they are used in the context of bringing people together, reclaiming those
public spheres where people can meet, talk, and plan collective actions. We
must learn to resist all technologies that reinforce the sense of excessive
individualism and privatization at the heart of the neoliberal world view.
We need more than bailouts; we need a politics that reinvents the concept of
the social while providing a language of critique and hope forged not in
isolation but in collective struggle that takes social responsibility,
commitment, and justice seriously. - Henry Giroux

Propaganda: The War on Terror is a Hoax

Hamas is a small organization armed with small caliber rifles incapable of
penetrating body armor. Hamas is unable to stop small bands of Israeli
settlers from descending on West Bank Palestinian villages, driving out the
Palestinians, and appropriating their land. The great mystery is: why after
60 years of oppression are the Palestinians still an unarmed people?
Clearly, the Muslim countries are complicit with Israel and the US in
keeping the Palestinians unarmed. The unsupported assertion that Iran
supplies sophisticated arms to the Palestinians is like the unsupported
assertion that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. These
assertions are propagandistic justifications for killing Arab civilians and
destroying civilian infrastructure in order to secure US and Israeli
hegemony in the Middle East. - Paul Craig Roberts

Revolt Builds Against Rip-off Rescue Plans for the Economy

Its message was simple enough. You--politicians and CEOs huddled at some
trade summit--are like the reckless scamming execs at Enron (of course, we
didn't know the half of it). We--the rabble outside--are like the people of
Argentina, who, in the midst of an economic crisis eerily similar to our
own, took to the street banging pots and pans. They shouted, "¡Que se vayan
todos!" ("All of them must go!") and forced out a procession of four
presidents in less than three weeks. What made Argentina's 2001-02 uprising
unique was that it wasn't directed at a particular political party or even
at corruption in the abstract. The target was the dominant economic
model--this was the first national revolt against contemporary deregulated
capitalism. - Naomi Klein
