The relationship between government that serves corporate interests and fascism/militarism was explored earlier. The federal budget moves research money out of the humanities into business degrees. I graduated from the College of Commerce in 1971 - so figure I can make some comment on this "another change" that will be brought about by the Federal government. I signed the petition (below); maybe we can stop it. If we can't, at least more people will be more aware. Aware of what? .. Hmmm . isn't that interesting. . Does it come down to consolidation of power? Look at it this way: - The movie "Iron Jawed Angels" is remarkable. Era is World War 1 in America. Women is various countries are fighting to get the vote. The power base in the society is white heterosexual males. I was dumb-founded by the threat to the power of men by the thought that their own wives and mothers might get the vote. The ostracizing, the imprisonment of women who campaigned to get the vote, their treatment in prison, etc. all happened because they were a threat to the white heterosexual male power base. In this era, women were the property of their husbands. They had no money of their own. - Run through your mind the struggles since then, of other groups in society who have fought for fair treatment or re-dress: Gays, First Nations, Disabled, those who fight for protection of the environment, Japanese Canadians, Chinese Canadians, . and so on. Where is the research done that helps those without power, that has helped us to develop a more fair society? . It's in the Humanities. Where is the power and control in today's world? It's in the transnational big-business corporations. How do you protect and expand the power and control in today's society? . Move the money out of the Humanities and into the business degrees. Is that what it comes down to? SSHRC funding has been used to complete ground breaking research in countless areas in Canada and around the world. The Federal Budget presented on January 27th contains a sentence that has the potential to halt this kind of research: "Scholarships granted by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council will be focused on business-related degrees". These measures are backward and insulting to the thousands of Canadians that are students and researchers in the social sciences and humanities.
