COMMENTARY Zyklon B saved lives! We have all heard the horror stories about how those evil Germans used a gas called "Zyklon B" to snuff out the lives of countless innocent Jews during World War II. But what is the truth? Yes, there was a gas called Zyklon B. And yes, it was used systematically in gas chambers as a matter of deliberate National Socialist policy. And yes, it did exterminate millions. The question is: How was it used, what was exterminated, and for what purpose? During the Second World War, it was not unusual to intern enemy aliens at special relocation centers. The United States did it with its Japanese citizens, even though there was no general hostility toward America on their part. Indeed, an entire regiment of them - the celebrated 442nd - distinguished itself in combat fighting for this country. There were, however, no comparable Jewish volunteer regiments fighting for National Socialist Germany. By any objective standard, therefore, the Jewish population of Europe - with its formal declaration of war against National Socialist Germany in 1933 - certainly qualified for internment as enemy aliens in time of war. Under the special conditions of close-quarter wartime confinement in central and eastern Europe - unlike those prevailing in the American West, where the Japanese were being held - there was the ever-present danger of an outbreak of the highly infectious disease known as typhus. Transmitted by lice and fleas, this deadly disease claimed thousands of lives following the outbreak of hostilities, before it could be checked. To prevent further spread of the disease, the German government instituted pro-active measures to ensure the health and well-being of everyone at the various relocation sites - internees, security, and administrative personnel alike. It was found that the best agent for this purpose was an ordinary disinfectant: Zyklon B. Cheap and effective, its use in special decontamination chambers proved the ideal means for exterminating millions - yes, billions - of disease-bearing lice and fleas, and in so doing for restoring basic hygienic conditions during a very difficult time. With nothing to hide, the German government - unlike the current US and Israeli regimes, with their respective secret prisons and torture chambers - was thus able to offer the International Red Cross free and unfettered access to every one of its internment sites at any time of that organization's choosing. Unfortunately, it was the very disruption of delivery of the most critical humanitarian supplies - food and medicines, as well as Zyklon B - by indiscriminate Allied bombing in the latter days of the war, which led to all those needless deaths later cited as "proof" of "Nazi atrocities."
