Thanks Jack. The nasty piece of proposed legislation you refer to is probably House Resolution 875, or the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009. It was introduced by <http://delauro.house.gov/contact.cfm> Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn in February '09. DeLauro's husband, Stanley Greenburg, works for - GUESS WHO - the world's leading corporate-fascist producer of herbicides and genetically engineered concoctions (GMO), Monsanto. DeLauro's act has <http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-875> 39 co-sponsors and was referred to the House Agriculture Committee on Feb. 4. It calls for the creation of a Food Safety Administration to allow the government to regulate food production at all levels - and even mandates property seizure, fines of up to $1 million per offense and criminal prosecution for producers, manufacturers and distributors who fail to comply with regulations. As you note, and as with all liberty-crushing oppression scenarios, this one is proffered as a benefit--for our safety and security, which only monster government bureaucracy can provide, of course. It's just another aspect of using government to stamp out competition/smaller operators and create a corporate monolith-- in this case, of our food system.
