Three varieties of genetically modified maize did not pollinate properly this season. Worst affected are farms in the Free State and North West. GM maize is touted by the government as an effective way to boost production. Biotech giant Monsanto will compensate farmers who suffered losses due to the failure of their GM maize varieties, but the company denied the problem was related to genetic modification. Grain SA this week estimated the failed harvest at between 80000 and 150000 tons. About 280 farmers were affected, out of 1003 who bought the maize. Grain SA spokesman Nico Hawkins said despite the losses, most farmers were happy with higher yields from GM maize seed. But the anti-GM lobby warned that the losses may be a sign of worse to come. "We regularly come across unintended side effects from plants that have been genetically engineered," said spokesman Andrew Taynton. ... IBlank said at Mar 22 2009 12:49PM I fully concur with pws80 to launch an urgent investigation into the unholy liason between Monsanto and the decision-makers in our government, notably why the inclusion of mandatory labeling of GMOs in the new Consumer Protection Bill meets with such staunch opposition from our minister of agriculture and minister of health! The latter have evidently not grasped the concept of a democratic government as yet, notably the constitutional rights of its citizens to a healthy environment, healthy food, the right to information and participation in decision-making processes and above all the right to BODILY INTEGRITY, which this government has violated and keeps violating by force-feeding the whole nation with Monsanto's untested toxic GN concoctions without our knowledge and above all CONSENT! Since no human safety study has ever been conducted proving that GMOs are safe for human consumption, this government has turned us into human guinea pigs of multinational companies, sacrificing the health of its citizens to fill the multi-billion coffers of Monsanto et al. The frequent assertion by the pro-GM lobby that GMOs are developed to fight against hunger does not hold water.
