More Warfare . . . and Less Healthcare Dear When PDA launched the Healthcare NOT Warfare campaign more than a year ago, the big trendlines were all going in the wrong direction. Now, after three months of the Obama presidency, the picture is more mixed. But there's no reason to be satisfied. The latest manifestations of the warfare state are grim. The president has back-loaded withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, while moving ahead with plans to double U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan. Courtesy of U.S. taxpayers, drone aircraft are killing from the air in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We're told the escalation is leading into a major and protracted U.S. war effort--on track to last at least another seven years. On the healthcare front at home, corporate forces are splicing and dicing the realpolitik options in Washington. Various "public option" scenarios are floating over the Capitol Dome. The insurance industry is licking its actuarial chops at proposals to funnel vast amounts of dollars from the U.S. Treasury into its coffers. With lots of media spin, the ideal of egalitarian healthcare for all has been reframed into multi-tier insurance coverage that--at best--will amount to some kind of healthcare apartheid. Separate and unequal medical coverage would provide top-rung healthcare for some Americans and bottom-of-the-barrel healthcare for others. Progressive Democrats of America does not waver from the principles of Healthcare NOT Warfare. We continue to educate, agitate and organize on behalf of truly universal, single-payer, guaranteed, enhanced Medicare-for-all coverage for every person in the United States.
