The head librarian and I have become friends and it is a pleasure going there, as over the years I know it like the back of my hand... But, today I went to view the "Journals of the Continental Congress". Which I had never seen, let alone heard of. I got the Gov. Doc. number and confidently went to locate the Journals. In this library it is Z2.7:1-4. Well "Z" is, as we all know at the end of the alphabet, so I walked to the way back....and found the "Z's", but no Journals..and the next stacks were all empty with a big sign, STAFF ONLY.....so I found the head librarian and she then walked with me to find them...she took me to the same place I was but headed into the STAFF ONLY area...and then there was one more shelf marked on the back side only "Z - Continued"....there they were on the very bottom shelf at the left end of the stacks. With excitement I looked for March 2, 1789, and page 605...but it was not there....it was gone and these Journals can not be checked out. This has perplexed the librarian and she is doing a search. We got into the conversation that these Journals are the beginning history of our country and without them you could not truly understand everything that follows, which is now a million or so documents just in this library alone and really they should be in the "A" stack as the beginning...She agreed, but said she has to follow the Gov. Doc. filing system and they say to put these in the "way back". So hopefully she will locate the missing journal and I can read first hand about the recess of Congress. But what I did find were the next 4 books...Doc. # Z 2.8: 1-4, Titled: SECRET JOURNALS of THE ACTS AND PROCEEDINGS of Congress, >From the First meeting thereof to the Dissolution of the Confederation, By the Adoption of the Constitution of the United States. ==== Published under the direction of the President of the United States, conformably to Resolution of Congress of March 27, 1818, and April 21, 1820 ==== Vol. IV I could not check the journal out of the Library and did not have enough time to really study what was in the "SECRET JOURNALS" but will go back soon to find out and copy. What I did read in Vol. IV was mostly letters written to his Most High Excellency Christian Buba King of several countries in Europe....kissing his Royal ass with pretty words.... The very last sentence in Vol. IV is as follows: Sept. 16, 1788 Resolved, That no further progress be made in the negotiations with Spain, by the secretary for foreign affairs; but that the subject to which they relate be referred to the federal government, which is to assemble in March next.
