Physicians for Social Responsibility August 9, 1945, 64 years ago yesterday, the nuclear weapon "Fat Boy" was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The bomb killed as many 80,000 people by the end of 1945-almost half on the days of the bombings. Among these, 15-20% died from injuries or the combined effects of flash burns, trauma, and radiation burns, compounded by illness, malnutrition and radiation sickness. Since then, more people have died from leukemia and solid cancers ascribed to exposure to radiation released by the bombs.
