17, 2004, Texas executed an innocent man. His name was Cameron Todd
Willingham.
Dear Alex,
If you sat down with a staunch supporter of the death penalty, I'm sure
you'd find a lot to disagree about. But it's hard for me to imagine that
even an advocate of capital punishment would think that the state of Texas
should be in the business of executing innocent people.
That is why the recent reporting about the execution of Cameron Todd
Willingham, for a crime that didn't occur, is so powerful.
Todd Willingham was executed for intentionally starting a fire that killed
his three children. But all six of the outside experts who have reviewed the
evidence of the Dec. 23, 1991 fire that killed the Willingham children have
concluded that there is no reason to think arson caused the fire.

means that there's no reason to think that the deaths of the Willingham
children were in any way criminal or that the crime for which Todd
Willingham was executed ever took place.
Far from being a murderer, Todd Willingham was the victim of a terrible
tragedy. But the tragedy Willingham faced at the loss of his children was
compounded by the injustice of his treatment by the Texas justice system.
Rick Perry can't bring Todd Willingham back and we have every reason to
think that the governor will continue to claim that he cannot grant a
posthumously pardon. But Governor Perry doesn't need any special authority
to clear Willingham's name informally by publicly acknowledging that a
terrible mistake was made and an injustice was committed by the state of
Texas.
