That's hardly surprising considering his style and subject matter. Neither is popular. The former is pretentious, while the latter not particularly accessible even to those of us who like those artsy, subtitled films that get brief runs at the Carlton or the Cumberland. But now Greyson has achieved international notice. Not for his work but for withdrawing his short Covered from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in protest of its new City to City program that is launching with a spotlight on Tel Aviv and its "diversity." "The emphasis on `diversity' in City to City is empty given the absence of Palestinian filmmakers in the program," he wrote in his now widely-circulated open letter to TIFF. "What this description does not say is that Tel Aviv is built on destroyed Palestinian villages, and that the city of Jaffa, Palestine's main cultural hub until 1948, was annexed to Tel Aviv after the mass exiling of the Palestinian population. This program ignores the suffering of thousands of former residents and descendants of the Tel Aviv/Jaffa area who currently live in refugee camps in the Occupied Territories or who have been dispersed to other countries, including Canada." One can argue, as many opinionators have, that it's not really relevant that those former Arab villages - now part of greater Tel Aviv - were conquered by Jewish "resistance" fighters in Irgun and Haganah before the Jewish state of Israel was proclaimed in 1948. But is it not part of the city's very recent history that most of its Arab residents were driven out, "literally pushed into the sea," as Israeli historian Ilan Pappe has written? How does one deny this sorry record? Even today, the expulsions continue. Most of the few thousand Palestinians who remain in Tel Aviv are fighting government eviction orders, all from their long-ago nationalized property, to make way for condo developments for wealthy Israeli and diaspora Jews. But, if any City to City films mention any of these facts, let alone dwell on them, I can't find them listed in the TIFF program guide. Greyson's letter has been endorsed by hundreds of filmmakers, authors, artists and academics, many of them Jewish and some even from Israel. These latter signatories have been accused of selling out their people, and more. They also stand charged with stifling debate, and of attacking freedom of expression. Which is pretty Orwellian, considering that their speaking out has blown the debate wide open. There's a lot to discuss, starting with why Toronto is the reported test market area for the campaign to improve Israel's "brand," one that has suffered horribly - especially since its invasion of Gaza last winter. Here in Canada, where Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government has uncritically sided with Israel, and where tax-exempt dollars are sent overseas to resettle Russian Jews in Israel and were used to plant trees on the rubble of destroyed Arab towns, it's fair game to debate all this without protests that Israel is being "singled out," complete with dark intimations of anti-Semitism. Indeed, Canadians might want to ask why it is that the recently formed Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism has received no corporate media attention, despite hints in its official mandate that it will be examining criticism of Israel as evidence of anti-Semitism. But the sands are shifting. While on one side, there is a push to equate criticism of Israel with "delegitimizing" the Jewish state, there are now voices rising to push back. Arabs are semites, too so referring to Arabs as anti-semites would suggest that Arabs are anti-Arab. In fact, it could easily be argued that the average Arab is significantly more semitic than the average Jew. An Arab is born as such. Anyone can convert and become a Jew. Their blood doesn't suddenly become Jewish upon conversion. The "Jewish blood" argument becomes more of a moot point as non-Jewish women convert just to please their Jewish in laws.
