Agent comes in from the cold to reveal army’s dirty tricks in Ireland
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article1166357.ece From The Sunday Times October 5, 2003 Agent comes in from the cold to reveal army¿s dirty tricks in Ireland Liam Clarke A FORMER British Army intelligence officer is to flout the Official Secrets Act by publishing a book detailing his work with a ??dirty tricks?? unit in Northern Ireland. The book, entitled Stakeknife and due to be published in Ireland, will tell how agents tortured people, aided loyalist terrorists and burnt down a police station to destroy damaging evidence about covert operations. It is being compared to Spycatcher, the memoirs of former MI5 agent Peter Wright, which caused a national scandal after it was published in Australia in the 1980s. Although the book is being published abroad, it is expected that extracts are likely to appear on the internet, which will cause embarrassment for the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The book??s co-author is Martin Ingram, the pseudonym used by a former British Army spymaster in Northern Ireland who has been injuncted against describing his career in Britain after a series of articles published in The Sunday Times. However, the British authorities cannot stop the information being published in Ireland. Ingram was a member of the Force Research Unit (FRU) which controlled the army??s undercover agents in Ireland. He first blew the whistle in a series of interviews with The Sunday Times in 1999, which exposed the existence of a super-mole within the IRA known as Stakeknife. Ingram also revealed how British Army undercover operatives had broken into a police station and set fire to it in an attempt to prevent Brian Nelson, their top agent within the loyalist UDA, being arrested. According to O??Brien Press, publisher of Stakeknife, it will be ??an explosive expos?? of how British military intelligence really works, from the inside??. It accuses Nelson of ??aiding loyalist terrorists and murderers in their bloody work??, and ??Stakeknife?? of being ??deputy head of the IRA??s infamous ??Nutting Squad??, the internal security force that tortured and killed suspected informers??. When Ingram revealed the existence of Stakeknife, The Sunday Times was compelled to give an undertaking that all notes on the affair had been destroyed. An MoD spokeswoman said no injunction was currently being considered but refused to rule out further action. ??Individuals involved in special duties owe a duty of confidentially to Her Majesty??s government, they are also subject to the Official Secrets Act. HMG will take what action is necessary to protect national security, including seeking legal recourse. They must carefully consider the risk they may create for individuals involved in intelligence gathering,?? she said. Greg Harkin, Ingram??s co-author, said: ??There is nothing in the book that will put any lives in danger, and some people in the MoD accept this. But I am told they have been informed that there are others who are worried that it will contain secrets that The Sunday Times was banned from publishing.?? *** exposing the hidden truth for further educational research only *** CAVEAT LECTOR *** In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C.
