Human need vs. the warfare state Dear Alex, The final act of "Healthcare Reform 2009" is nearing on Capitol Hill. So is President Obama's decision on the next phase of the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan. In each case, the dramas of political rhetoric and media pyrotechnics often obscure what's at stake. The basic goal of guaranteeing healthcare for all should not be confused with the kaleidoscope of legislative proposals for reforming the health insurance industry. Likewise, the arguments for "counterinsurgency" or "counterterrorism" should not distract from the fundamental question of whether the United States is going to bring more violence to a nation of Afghans who have already endured 30 years of war. The Healthcare NOT Warfare campaign, launched by PDA almost two years ago, is not about tuning up a profit-driven healthcare system. Nor are we engaged in efforts to find the best way for the U.S. government to "win" the Afghanistan war. During a recent visit to Kabul, I saw the real enemy. It is extreme, and it kills without compunction. The enemy is poverty. Every day, Progressive Democrats of America endeavors to go beneath the surface to the essence of political issues and human realities. So, we work to achieve single-payer healthcare for all, not taxpayer subsidies for the insurance industry. And we're advocating for a surge of humanitarian aid, development assistance and genuine regional diplomacy--not continuation of military destruction--in Afghanistan. The consequences of Washington's de facto priorities are manifested in every state of the USA and in every province of Afghanistan.
