Buzz In September 2004, The Augusta Chronicle's editorial Board chastised CBS News for relying on subsequently determined forged documents to allege that President Bush used his family's clout to get into the Texas Air National Guard. Editorials went from insisting that CBS stop circling the wagons, to demanding an investigation, and finally to recommending that Dan Rather, the expose's presenter, resign or be terminated. At the heart of The Chronicle's position was that there is no room in a news organization for "a rabid liberal partisan who apparently won't let the facts get in the way of a juicy story that might derail a Republican presidency." Sean Hannity of Fox News recently reported on a rally against health-care reform held by Republican lawmakers. Background footage showed another rally held months earlier. The Daily Show uncovered it, and Hannity apologized on-air. Hannity said the addition was inadvertent. But it is hard to fathom how footage from months earlier could be accidentally added. Reasonable people would conclude that the earlier footage could only be intentionally added. This is especially true if one ties Hannity's ideology with an interest in making a small showing at a rally appear to be much more attended. Paraphrasing The Chronicle's own standard, it is apparent that Hannity is a rabid conservative partisan who apparently won't let the facts get in the way of a juicy story that might derail a Democratic presidency, or at least its legislative agenda. If The Chronicle has any editorial integrity, it will attack Fox News and Hannity with the same gusto as it did CBS and Rather. Fox News and Hannity should suffer harsher reprisal since the CBS story was the result of, in The Chronicle's words, "sloppy journalism," while Hannity intentionally misrepresented. It didn't let CBS or Rather off the hook, and it certainly wouldn't have sat quietly in the face of Hannity's "laugh it off" apology had it come from Rather. This is an opportunity for The Chronicle to stand for its previously stated principles, regardless where they may lead. Will The Chronicle accept the challenge?
