We have two wars in Central Asia and are threatening others in Yemen and Iran. In addition to the terrible slaughter of human beings, these costly wars also kill our economic ability to work our way out of recession or to build the future of America. We are failing the unemployed, and our children in nutrition, health and education. We are failing to replace the worn infrastructure largely built during the depression of the 30's or to make the investment necessary to control global warming and adapt to conditions we cannot control. We see that many of our Representatives in Congress are largely controlled by big corporate money through lobbyists. Our Senators are too often focused on their campaign chests, swollen to meet the high cost of television ads, and so partisan that there is little hope of passing vigorous legislation to benefit the nation. For those of us who remember the Roosevelt years and the postwar efforts to remake the world with the United Nations, the Marshal Plan, and the G.I. Bill, this warring government and its huge Pentagon expenditures in the face of high unemployment is a disgrace. Our more than 835 military bases in foreign lands and our efforts to intervene in the affairs of other nations reek of the very colonialism from which America revolted in 1776. I know that many Americans want our country back. We want an end to unnecessary wars, to burgeoning military budgets, to the purchase of high-tech systems to fight more wars, to the military recruiting in our high schools and colleges, to the vast army of privateers who are overpaid to support these worldwide efforts. We want a government focused on the needs of the American people. As for security, let us develop a shared international police force to dry up these cells of suicidal terrorist fanatics. And let us stop recruiting more of them with our drones and bombs and bases on the other side of the Earth. The House and the Senate, with the help of thousands of lobbyists, have become the servants of the corporations and we, the people, are left without effective representation in the Congress. Only very popular and courageous representatives can ignore the fund-raising efforts of the lobbyists. These honorable representatives are all that remain of our democracy. Many of them are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. They deserve our highest respect and consistent support. The others must be pressured to serve their communities and the nation. The weak link in the chain of money and influence that is strangling democracy is the need for incumbent representatives to be reelected every two years. 2010 is one of those years. I believe that concerned citizens should be running candidates in many of the 435 Congressional districts. When representatives no longer represent the views of their constituents ( and support watered-down health care reforms, for example) others should challenge their seats. That is how democracy works under our Constitution. It is not difficult to become a candidate in the primary election. You will need to pay a registration fee and/or collect signatures of voters registered in the party in which you will run. This information and the election calendar is available in your state. You will need a small team of people to circulate petitions, raise money and operate telephones and storefront offices. Once you are on the ballot you will want to visit and become known to as many people as possible. Ask to speak in churches, union meetings and other organizations - particularly those that worked for Obama and want his promise of change realized by the Congress. There are many advantages to such political activity. Once you are a candidate you can speak in many forums that otherwise would be closed to you. You can and must debate the incumbent, thus spreading your ideas and priorities. You will soon notice that political people listen to political challenges from people they would otherwise ignore. Finally, whether your candidate gets many votes or not, your candidate will become a recognized local personality with greater access to both the incumbent and the media. Too many incumbent Representatives and Senators are returned to Washington without facing a serious challenge, because people assume that they are unbeatable. This assumption makes them increasingly indifferent to popular opinion. They use their power to get earmarks with which to pacify the community, while serving the interests that have contributed to their election campaigns. This is not democracy. We can best preserve the vigor of our great democratic heritage by running and supporting candidates who want to serve their constituents and the future of America.
