I upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04 and found this issue has never been resolved.
Marking it as fix released for the Unity fixes is fine but that does not resolve the core issue of this bug ticket, namely the updated will not show up. If I kill it and then launch it myself it comes to the foreground just fine.
