Without considering what competitors do, Shift+Ctrl+W would seem to make more sense than Shift+Ctrl+T. (Though we also have Ctrl+F4, so maybe also Shift+Ctrl+F4.)

Either because of a missed mouse click on the tab bar, accidentally hitting ctrl+w instead of ctrl+a (or whatever), or just simply being dumb. Chromium and Firefox both use Shift+Ctrl+T for this.
