Only the parsing of custom search engine descriptions is implemented as of today (but you shouldn’t need to remount your device rw, you can put your custom definitions in /home/phablet/.local/share/webbrowser- app/searchengines/).
Automated discovery of search engine definitions made available by web pages is not implemented. I agree this would be nice to have, but it’s not on the roadmap.
