unity8.log.2.gz from comment #2 shows Unity8 is crashing. Seemingly
because something in the Unity8 process is pulling in the old (non-lite)
libprotobuf.so.9 that conflicts with Mir's libprotobuf-lite.so.9:

Title:
unity8 black screen
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I have installed the unity8-desktop-session-mir on a fully upgraded
16.04. When I select the Unity8 session, type in the password and
press Enter, the screen goes black and nothing happens. I tried to
wait a minute, but nothing changed (there no mouse cursor either), so
I have rebooted the computer. I have an older Intel onboard graphics,
I'm not sure whether it is even supported by Mir or not.
