« the content they serve for our default UA string is badly laid out » To verify that assertion, I used chromium on my desktop with a user- agent override (using the default webbrowser-app UA string on a phone), and I’m getting the same layout issue. See attached screenshot.

You'll find a box for an embedded video. That box doesn't show a video (perhaps something we could support?) but instead just displays a text saying that video playback is not supported on this browser/platform. That's one issue, but leaving that aside, the much bigger issue is that this box is actually bigger than it should be (or the container around it smaller than it should be) and it happens that this box is covering parts of the article's text. This causes the browser to even be of no use for just reading the text on this page.
