@Devid Thanks for your suggestions. To answer your queries: 1. I don't think so. 2. If I remember correctly, the sound icon doesn't change. I'll check again. 3. No, I seldom play music and videos on the phone. 4. I'll check this once the issue reappears. I already tried the top portion of comment #5 (try to turn up the volume as soon as an SMS arrives), but didn't seem helpful. It only changed the speaker volume which was already high.

Also in the indicator menu the envelope icon turns green and the new SMS is listed as usual. Things are working alright for Telegram, Gmail etc. (sound+LED+indicator menu).
