unity8 crashing repeatedly on nexus 7

Bug description:
I upgraded using 'sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade' (on the device, ssh'ing in
from the host) and the unity8 shell no longer loaded.
SSHing in still works fine.
After doing a new phablet-flash cdimage-touch, I am getting the same
issues.
What follows is the contents of ~/.cache/upstart/unity8.log with what
looks like a few attempts of unity8 to start up, and getting some
fatal errors:
