i tested with terminix and gedit native (without Xmir) and it doesn't
bring up the keyboard. qt5 apps seems to work fine though, tested with
kate, tiled, qupzilla, also seems to work fine in app drawer, system
settings

  Ubuntu 17.04 Unity 8

  OSK doesn't work with Xmir or gtk3 
  enable the On Screen Keyboard (from indicator menu or from system settings)
  open gedit or terminix (without Xmir) and try to type something, OSK doesn't 
show, same with running on Xmir
