If you swipe left on the failed message you will see an option for "i"
for information. Invoking this will show delivery report and Status, but
I'm not sure at this point if the Status message gives detailed
description of the error failure.

  Doesn't explain why messages failed to be send

Status in “messaging-app” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Using rtm 17 on krillin

  Trying to send a contact info or a picture from a photo without data
  plan leads to an error, that might be expected but it would be nice to
  give a clue in the U.I when the message failed to be sent
