However, even with those off, it keeps happening. On 12.04.1 it was fine until I did a system update, and on 13.10 (it was suggested to me that I should see if the problem was fixed), the problem was there immediately out of the box (although it wasn't there when I was on a live session). The test sounds came out fine, but when I play back a music file through (for example) Totem, it eventually starts crackling and popping. I tested the song in the "Examples" folder and some mp3's in 12.04.1, but I didn't test any mp3's yet on 13.10.
