Binary package hint: pulseaudio
Booting up, or resuming from suspend, pulse will very often (though
not always) fail to initialize if a webcam with a USB mic is plugged
in. This behavior was never observed with 10.04 and is new since
upgrading to 10.10.
With a Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 webcam plugged in, this appears in
/var/log/user.log:

Pulse will continue to fail until the webcam is unplugged, at which
point (or shortly thereafter) pulse will successfully start up.
Once pulse is initialized, I can reconnect the webcam and it functions
properly (both video and the microphone).
