I was unable to recreate this in a bionic schroot.

Could you double check or provide some more information on how I might
recreate this? Its also worth noting that the version of gunzip in
artful and bionic is the same one.

I use "gzip -d" or "gunzip" to extract build logs to update the
symbols. For example:

However, on Bionic this last command fails with:
gzip: buildlog_ubuntu-bionic-
amd64.kf5-messagelib_4:17.11.80+p18.04+git20171119.2017-0_BUILDING.txt.gz:
not in gzip format
The same file extracts on other systems, just not Bionic 18.04
