Anyway, shutting down from X session doesn't work. Screen stays blank black, cursor blinking in top left corner. Seems like it's stuck there forever (haven't had patience to wait long enough). Found a workaround: in the black screen cursor blinking state above, hit Ctrl+Alt+F7. One second or so after that, the system shuts down cleanly every time.
