When a headphone is plugged, the output "connector" in pulse audio becomes "headphone". In this state, the volume is extremely low and a high pass filter is in effect, making the sound quality poor. It seems that when a heaphone is plugged, the high pass filter should be deactivated, and the speaker volume left at its current level. I am running Ubuntu 11.10. Alsa is 1.0.24.2.
