Title:
[Realtek ALC889] Horrible Sound distortion
Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Since I installed ubuntu (10.04 then 10.10) on my new machine (asus
p7h55d-m evo motherboard with ALC889 codec), I've been getting
horrible, constant static/crackling distortion on every 7.1 channel.
The sound card I'm using is the onboard Realtek audio, which has 6
jacks on the back, two on the front (headphones/microphone) and one
s/pdif connector.
Setting the mode to stereo did not improve the situation.
Changing the speakers did not improve it either.
Anyway, i get perfect sound in Windows, so this shouldn't be a hardware
problem.
The noise starts when Ubuntu is still booting. There is a constant,
very loud static "background noise" overlaid with more variable
"crackling" noises, which get worse at apparently random times
(unrelated to sound being actually played). The signal-to-noise ratio
is absolutely unbearable. Totally ruins listening to music.
I tried changing the model in alsa-base.conf to several others, to no avail.
I also tried installing new alsa/pulseaudio packages, which didn't fix the
problem.
This codec seems rather rare (not to be mixed up with ALC889A) which might
explain the lack of improvement in new alsa builds in recent months.
I also have a second sound card from my ATI graphics card, which
outputs to hdmi, but i haven't tried digital audio in either card for
lack of digital speakers.
alsa-info.sh output is at http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=eed5a8723339d6a84d27bfa34d9210f4f7bba87b
I get many of these:
pulseaudio[5718]: ratelimit.c: 287 events
Also, booting on an old ubuntu livecd (9.04) gives the same issue, as
well as with other distributions i've tried.
