Sound stutters

Bug description:
It seems that any sound file I play ends up coming out choppy like a cd with
scratches. I had been presented with fix and it has seemed to work, but it made
VLC totally garbled.
The fix is as follows: "sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa", then change
"load-module module-udev-detect" to "load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0".
Audio plays great in Totem and Rythmbox, but VLC is totally garbled.
