No microphone _device_ found, ever, internal or via jack

Bug description:
dv7 - 3164cl, audio output working fine, via speakers and jacks, but
no mic device listed on any alsa aumix or pavucontrol.
it worked in windows7 before I wiped it and put 10.10 on, so guessing
there is a driver issue...
