Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Speakers automute upon headphone plugin, however no sound comes out of
  headphones. To be noted, Studio 1749s have two headphone jacks. This
  bug report relates to the first jack. A second bug report will be sent
  on the second.
