Soundcard not detected

Bug description:
I am new to Ubuntu.I only installed this ops after downloading this morning.
After installing and updating noticed that the sound icon has a cross beside
it(white cross red background).
Tried the sound test followed all instruction to no avail.
Please can you help the audio is on board,motherboard is an (Asus M2A-VM~)
using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010 and
supported until April 2013.
