Title:
no sound coming to headphones or speakers (volume checked)

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I'm using 10.04 which moments ago did a huge update with the automated update
manager.
Now no sound coming out of headphones (checked that the headphones work with
my iphone).
The Pulse Audio Control program shows which applications are making sounds
and all looks good.
No volumn knob is muted or down to 0% or anything like that.

I'm running on a MacBook Pro 7,1 and I can use the F11 and F12 buttons
to change the volume like before (with a visual indicator) but still
  no sound coming out.

The built-in speakers have never worked on this MacBook Pro unless I
  boot into OSX.
