Thunderbird 17 not responding after 5-30 seconds

Bug description:
I am running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Everytime I start Thunderbird version
17 or 10 ESR (the build that is attempting to run as I type this is
'thunderbird 17.0+build2-0ubuntu0.12.04.1') the program will work for
anywhere between about 5 and 30 seconds and then stop responding and
the only way to get out is to force quit.
