Title:
[VIA8233 - VIA 8235, playback] No sound at all

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I've seen so many reports of problems with this chipset (many of which
were invalid; muted chnls, incorrect connections etc), I'm hesitant to
report this as a bug. However, I've tried everything I can think of
(and solutions suggested elsewhere online) with no luck.

I initially had problems with Pulse, but on digging further it seems
this problem is due to ALSA. The device is detected, audio
applications (for example mpg123) play audio happily - there's just
zero output from the back audio port on the motherboard. The mic and
line-in ports work as expected (for example, fldigi receives audio and
  plot it on the waterfall).

I've tried all combinations of chnl mutes, volumes etc in alsamixer.
I've also tried 'external amplifier' both on and off (many reports
suggest this as a fix). Zero difference.
